A guide for people thinking of training

Becoming a hypnotherapist, start to finish

Everything between "I'd love to do this" and seeing your first paying client: choosing a course, the diploma, your pathway, and what you set up once you qualify.

Before you start

Choose a course

Look for a course a professional body recognises, with real hours of teaching and practice in a room with other students.

  • Which body accredits it, for example the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Hypnotherapy Society (HS) or the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) (what each one is, and what it costs)
  • Taught hours, and how many are in person
  • Price, deposit and paying monthly

Qualification, kept for life

Train for your diploma

Most practitioner diplomas run over weekends for nine months or more, with case studies and supervised practice between them.

Many schools teach towards the HPD, the NCH's practitioner diploma: taught at NCH-accredited schools with at least 120 hours of classroom teaching, and certificated jointly by NCH and the awarding body NCFE. NCH says it is benchmarked at Level 4. What the letters mean

While you train

Practise on real clients

Your school will ask for practice hours. Seeing clients at a lower student rate, clearly labelled as in training, builds your confidence and your case studies.

Your direction

Choose a pathway

Some courses share one core and let you choose where to go deeper: anxiety and stress, sleep, stopping smoking and weight, or working with children and young people. You can add more later as CPD.

Qualification, kept for life

Qualify

Pass your assessments and case studies and you receive your diploma. The certificate is yours for life.

Membership, while a member

Join a professional body

Membership gives you letters after your name, a code of conduct, a public register and a complaints route for your clients. Letters from a membership last only while you are a member.

Before your first client

Get insured

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Your body will tell you what it asks for, and many insurers offer student cover while you train.

Ongoing

Find a supervisor

Regular supervision with an experienced practitioner: someone to talk your cases through with. Most bodies ask for it, and your school can usually suggest supervisors.

Registration, while registered

Join the CNHC register

The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) is a voluntary regulator, and its register is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). For hypnotherapy it asks for training that meets its core curriculum: 450 hours in total, at least 120 of them in the room with a tutor, over at least nine months, with three case studies, at Level 4 equivalent. You apply through a professional body it works with. Registering costs £75, then £75 a year (2026 fees). Every body side by side

Ask your school before you sign up: "Does this course meet the CNHC standard?"

Every year

Keep learning (CPD)

CNHC registrants do 15 hours of CPD a year, and each body sets its own amount. Short courses, workshops and supervision groups all count.

Questions

Asked a lot

Is hypnotherapy regulated in the UK?

No law requires a hypnotherapist to join a body. Hypnotherapists join voluntary bodies and registers. The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and the National Hypnotherapy Society (HS) hold registers accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Choosing a course a body recognises keeps your options open.

Can I train online?

Many courses mix online and in-person teaching, but it matters for registration. The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) asks for at least 120 hours taught with the tutor in the room, and the National Hypnotherapy Society (HS) does not accept training done purely online. Check before you sign up.

How long until I can see clients?

Practice clients usually start during your training. Most people see paying clients once they have qualified, are insured and have joined a professional body.

What is the HPD?

The Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) is the practitioner diploma of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), certificated jointly by NCH and the awarding body NCFE. NCH says it is benchmarked at Level 4. It is not on Ofqual's register of regulated qualifications.

How much does hypnotherapy training cost?

It depends on the school, the hours and whether you pay monthly. Our compare page shows each school's own price and the date we checked it.
